Workout with the Hubby

The husband and I have a gym membership at Planet Fitness. For the first time in a while, we went and worked out together. He's used to working out somewhat like this:

And I'm used to working out somewhat like this:

Fuckin' Chuck Norris.
So we combined the two to arrive at a cardio + strength workout that took us exactly one hour, including warm-up and cool down. Here's how it went:

0:00 - 5:00 Warm up on an elliptical machine
5:00 - 30:00 Arms/Chest and Abs, including: chest press, assisted chin pull-up, assisted dip, crunches, oblique crunches, and planks for 30 seconds.
30:00 - 50:00 Elliptical Machine
50:00 - 1:00:00 Stretch and cool down.

It was nice, having him there with me, mostly because we pushed each other to try and max out our limits. I probably would not have done as much as I did if he hadn't been there. So, lesson: get a work out partner who is serious (free) or hire a trainer (not free) for best results.

Some things I noticed:

  • He's not used to fitting in his workouts in one hour. When he works out with friends, they pick things up and put them down for anywhere from 1 hour to 3. Which, if you're busy as hell like we are, doesn't really work. So getting him used to the pace that I was at when I worked with a personal trainer (back when I lived in Lansing) was interesting. "Only two sets?" he says. "Yep! We got shit to do," I replied.
  • When we did ab workouts, our backs felt it too. Because we're freaking out of shape.
  • He burned less calories for distance than I did on the elliptical machine. I burned about 10 more calories than he did, and I went .25 miles less than him. Not sure why that its. Remind me to look into that.
We're going for our second workout today, legs and abs. Should be interesting!
